Student Rabbi Sam Stern

Samuel Stern will be Temple Chai's student rabbi for the 2020-2021 academic year. He is completing his fifth (and final) year of rabbinical studies at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion's (HUC-JIR) Los Angeles campus.

Earlier in his rabbinical school training he was the student rabbi of Congregation Brith Sholem in Ogden, Utah and the rabbinic intern at USC Hillel. He was Temple Chai's summer intern in 2017, and was director of youth engagment at Temple Beth-El for four years before enrolling at HUC-JIR.  


Sam holds two masters degrees, one from HUC-JIR and another in Jewish communal service from Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University. His undergraduate degree is in history and Jewish studies, also from Towson University.


Sam is married to Caryn Stern, an epidemiologist with the Department of Defense. They returned to San Antonio from Los Angeles in the summer of 2020.
